Many words have been thrown about in attempt to describe this man: Arrogant, Intelligent, Womanizing, Cruel, Callous, Impatient, Close-minded, Wreckless to the point of being suicidal, womanizing, and the list goes on to name more and more unsavory traits. However, those who describe him this way do a great disservice to this man who has pledged his life to the liberation of all those plagued by the oppression inflicted by Voldemort and his Death Eater followers.
Sirius Black has a big heart, but does not always know how to convey this. Extremely moving displays of emotion aren't his style and he tends to keep his feelings masked behind a facade of stony indifference (or sometimes irritation). Still, things effect him far more than he could ever physically show, and it is simply impossible to be as unfeeling as some people accuse him of. The death of his wife, for example, sent him spiraling into a vortex of depression that he was only able to climb out of due to the aid and support of his best and dearest friends. It is these friends, perhaps, that know the side of Sirius that he hides from the world.
After experiencing death, Sirius Black no longer fears it. Fearless is how he wants to seem to those he battles against nearly every night. However, like everybody, he is human and has his weaknesses. One of his greatest fears was realized when his wife was poisoned by an unknown Death Eater, so now he puts everything he has into protecting their daughter, Lilianna. He is a devoted father, would do anything for the darling child who had him wrapped around her finger the moment she set her gray colored eyes on him. Another of Sirius' fears is losing a student... any student. He takes his jobs as Deputy Headmaster and Head of the Auror Department very seriously. Battle hardened in many ways, he is almost desensitized to death and mayhem, but the loss of a student would be enough to break him down.
When threatened, Sirius tends to lash out, often throwing out harsh barbs or petty insults. This is most evident when he speaks to his rival and hated enemy, Severus Snape. Despite having grown a lot since his coming through the veil, as always, Sirius has a tendency to be easily provoked which lends to his wreckless reputation. It is something he is working on to better himself at controling.
When it comes to love, Sirius has a lot of it. Love for his daughter, his friends, his god son Harry, and love for his students. But he considered his true love to be Gabrielle Nefertiri, and though he has moved passed the inconsolable period of grief and is ready to start dating again, he is still wary of giving his heart away. At times, he feels like he is betraying the love he shared, and at others, when he feels like the woman he is with has made a connection with him, he fears that he will lose them like he lost Gabby and just cuts them off all together.

Born into a notable pure-blood family of proud Slytherin alumni, Sirius was the first son and with that came many expectations and hopes. All of which he would prove not only to be a major disappointment, but he truly went out of his way to do the exact opposite of what his parents had wished of him. This Gryffindor grew to hate his parents early on, resented his brother for being the perfect puppet for their pure-blooded elitism, and did everything in his power to rub in their faces just how crazed, fanatical, and incredibly stupid they were. When he turned sixteen, it came as a shock to no one that he ran away from home. Taken in by the Potters, his life was supposed to become much more simple... Only, it didn't quite work out that way.
School was his haven. His paradise. He loved it and flaunted just about everything he had from his good looks, charm, and startling intelligence. Together with his best friends, James Potter, Remus Lupin, and to some lesser extent, Petter Pettigrew, they caused all sorts of mayhem and merriment. They dubbed their group the marauders and were the notorious predecessors to the Weasley twins when it came to making mischief. They even created the famous Marauder's map having discovered many of the secret and hidden passages around Hogwarts. However, one of their greatest achievements while attending was becoming unregistered animagi by their fifth year.
But then the war started, and lines were drawn. Sirius firmly took a side, standing beside his friends in the Order of the Phoenix, and against the woman he had come to love, Gabrielle Nefertiri. It was as he discovered that she was a double agent working for Albus Dumbledore that he professed his love to her and proposed. However, that same week, the events that would become legend unfolded. James and Lily Potter were slain in their hope at Godric's Hollow and Harry had somehow banished the Dark Lord. Livid at the idea that his friend, Peter, could have betrayed his friends (knowing that he was the secret keeper), he went to confront him and was then framed for not only the betrayal, but mulitple murders. He would spend the next twelve years in Azkaban.
Sirius Black continued to operate ahead of the curve, becoming the first person to ever escape Azkaban. He returned to exact revenge and claim the responsibility of raising Harry as a legal guardian, but things did not exactly work out as planned. He spent the next few years in hiding, not even being able to tell the woman he loved that he was back until the end. By then, she was working as a double agent again, and before much could be done to further their relationship, he had gone to the Ministry for what was to be his final battle.
But that was not the end for Sirius Black.
Returning through the veil five years ago, he sought to make right the things he had not been able to do previously. One of the first things he did upon returning was propose marriage to Gabrielle Nefertiri. Over the next couple of years, coupled with the return on his best mates, James and Remus, they would reorganize the Order of the Phoenix and establish themselves in the Ministry to make a proper and resolute stand against the man who just would not stay dead. He became head of the Auror department admist popular support, and not long after, Professor Minerva McGonnagal, the new headmistress at Hogwarts, named him Deputy Headmaster and Head of Gryffindor. It went without saying that his work put a strain on his engagement, and they separated for a time until it was discovered that she was pregnant.
The married after Lilianna was born, and just as it seemed it would be smooth sailing from that point onward, Sirius received the dreadful news that his wife had been poisoned.
