PERSONALITY:
Severus is a very serious man. Stoic and quite humorless, he is the type of person you wouldn't want to cross in a dark alley. He prides himself on his intelligence, knowing full well that he surpasses the average person, and he has not trouble rubbing that in the faces of those he considers beneath them. The list is too long to account for. He doesn't exactly possess a sense of humor, but he is amused whenever he's able to get the upperhand in a battle of wills and wits- particularly when that battle is against somebody like James Potter or Sirius Black.
He is a calculating individual, going more for the cerebral attacks rather than the physical blows. Though he is quite capable of front line fighting, he thrives in the back ranks, plotting and supporting. He considers himself to be a valuable asset to whoever deserves him.
As an educator, he'd rather be feared than loved. He doesn't care if the students like him, but they had better respect him - or else be afraid... He is known to lash out on those who give him cheek, is known to pick favorites, and has a penchant for giving one Harry Potter a hard time. Gryffindors he especially takes his pent up rage out on.
His hatred is a big part of who he is. He resents quite a few people, all beginning with his father who made his home life as a child unsatisfactory. School fared no better for Snape as he was bullied relentlessly by Potter and his thugs. Not that he just laid down and took it. For many reasons, he resents and hates James and Sirius, and to a lesser extent, Remus Lupin who is mostly just guilty by association. The point is, this hatred drives a lot of what Snape does.

Severus Snape did not come back through the veil when Sirius, James, or Lily did. In fact, it was six months prior to their return that Severus was led through the veil by none other than Lord Voldemort. Unaware of the betrayal Snape committed years ago, Voldemort assumed that the former Headmaster at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry would return to contest Albus Dumbledore for the position at the school and once again be his puppet within the walls. However, upon his return, he once again pledged his loyalty to Albus and agreed to continue working as a double agent, a deal sealed with an unbreakable vow.
The Order slowly began to come back together, but it was a tattered miserable group that would have stood no chance against the Death Eaters. There was also a distinct lack of trust, particularly with Gabrielle Nefertiri, a woman who was known to have been deeply in love with Sirius before his imprisonment and death. However, love can spring in the most unlikely of places, and while she, at first, channeled her anger and hate into Severus, she soon began to turn to him for solace and comfort. The relationship was slow to form, but once it was set, Snape was sure that he had finally found a love that could surpass that which he felt for Lily Evans.
And then Sirius Black came through the veil and Severus' world was turned upside down. He had thought he had an unbreakable love with Nefertiri, but he had been mistaken. The fairy tale was not meant to be for him as she had never truly stopped loving Sirius Black. The rivarly between the deepened and turned to sheer, unadulterated hate when Gabrielle finally left him for Sirius. To add insult to injury, Snape learned that Gabrielle had been with child, his child... a son. But during a duel he engaged in with Sirius, she had run between them and was injured badly enough to have lost him.
While he resented Gabrielle for leaving him, he blamed Black for it. And Black did not help the situation. He gloated every chance he had, constantly reminding Severus of everything he'd lost. Luckily, after Gabrielle married Sirius and gave birth to his daughter, the gloating stopped. News of her death shocked him more than he expected it would. He did attend her funeral even though he was afraid that Sirius would do something stupid if he were to be seen, but when he was spotted, all Black asked of him was to help him find the person who killed his wife. Snape agreed.
Today, Severus continues to work as the Potion's Master at Hogwarts. He had hoped to regain his position as Head of Slytherin, but for some reason, the new headmistress, McGonagall, saw fit to instate Persephone Silverton, Gabrielle's older sister, in the role that rightly belonged to him...
