History
When Joshua was born, he was exceptionally quiet. As a baby he did not cry and he worried his parents with his silence. Even when his sister, Victoria, started to say her first words, he refused to talk. His mother began to fear that he was mute like she was. At the age of three, Josh began to use his fingers and hands to try and communicate with others. He created his own sign language that only his sister was able to understand. For some reason, Victoria understood what her brother wanted just by a couple of hand signs. It was at the age of six that Joshua first began to speak, in school, when a teacher asked him a question. He hated it. Just the feeling that the words made when he spoke them, he did not like it. He felt as though the words hurt his throat and he spoke as little as possible.
However, he taught himself to read when he was four. He indulged himself in the world of ink and paper, devouring any sort of fiction. He began to read big books and spent hours in his bed reading. He did not mind what it was he read, he enjoyed it all. He read fiction, autobiographies and biographies, newspapers and science books. In books no one required him to speak, he was allowed to be quiet and no one thought it was strange. Then he began to write. He wrote down everything. The birds he saw in the sky and the amount of people he saw walking the street on his way to the bakers. He wrote while he walked, in way of talking. He used notebooks and diaries, pieces of spare paper to write what he wanted to say.
Most people think that Joshua is shy, but he really isn't. He is just quiet. He can speak but he will only speak when he feels like it and usually only when he is spoken to.
At the age of nine, Josh ran out of paper when he went out with a couple of his best friends. He started to write on his arms and fingers to let people know what he was trying to say. It worked well and still today his arms and fingers are covered in black ink, with words that he did not want to say.
When he was admitted into Hogwarts with his sister, he did not mind terribly into which house he came. He really did not bother himself with the meanings of the houses and the competitive drive that exists between them. He joined Hufflepuff and he found that he was quite happy there, a nice house with nice people that had a meaning to it that could be interpreted in whichever way he wanted. Yes, that was the type of house he belonged in. Sports was just another issue for him. He saw the way other boys and girls obsessed about Quidditch and while he thought it was a nice sport, it never quite suited him. He prefers to sit in the stands and cheer for his team, not actually be out there.
Josh likes to laugh; he has a full throated, jubilant laugh that is infectious, and then he has a silent laugh, where he goes through the motions of laughing, where he laughs on the inside.
