“The Price of Victory”
The war has ended, the Dark Lord at last defeated, and the magical world is now free from the firm grasp of terror that Voldemort and his Death Eaters once held. But the cost of victory was a high one indeed, and the ghosts of battle linger beneath every street lamp, down every dark corridor, and around every corner. When all the graves have been dug and the stones of a broken castle relaid, the scars of war show most clearly on the faces of those who remain. The living mourn the dead. They grieve for the friends and family that are gone, never to return.
Three years have come and gone, and an uneasy peace has settled over the magical community. Life has gone on, the school has remained opened, and business has resumed as usual. At the head of it all is Kingsley Shacklebolt, the Minister of Magic and a hero of the time, one who fought bravely against the Dark Lord and one able to lend strength to the demoralized and sorrowful people. His aim, and the aim of the Ministry of Magic: to heal the wounds of the past and move into a bright and peaceful future. It is no secret to any that the deepest of these wounds lies at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
“Life Goes On”
In the foyer of the castle sits a statue with a golden plaque - a memorial to those who fought and died three years ago. Beyond that, the castle has been rebuilt, and under the guidance of their new headmistress, Minerva McGonagall, the professors strive for a sense of normalcy and perhaps a sense of security. Though generally regarded by many as the best person to head the school, Professor McGonagall very early on received harsh criticism for her decision to appoint a former Death Eater as one of the new members of the staff. Even so, her tenure remains a peaceful one, and the remnants of the violent past are fast becoming a memory.
But the veil stirs. And death, as they say, is the greatest Mystery of all.
“Beyond the Veil”
No one could say how it happened, nor could it be explained as to what caused the veil to be lifted from the other side. All they knew was that one morning, without warning, Sirius Black was suddenly standing alone deep in the heart of the Department of Mysteries, before the very veil through which he’d disappeared nearly five years before. Taken into immediate custody, the Minister ordered an investigation into the mystery’s of the veil on around the appearance of what he feared might be an impostor. The next few days would usher in the re-appearance of many who had fallen in the first and second war, and it did not take long for healers and magical law enforcers to confirm that those who returned were, in fact, who they appeared to be. While a strange phenomenon, the veil soon became a beacon of hope for those who lost loved ones, lists appearing in the Daily Prophet of those who’d returned being published frequently.
When James and Lily Potter came back through the veil, it made the front page, with reporters, writers, and hundreds of others crowding outside of Saint Mungo’s in attempt to watch their reunion with their son, Harry. But even though the veil brought about a surge of much needed joy to the magical community, it was not long before a very grim reality dawned upon the people...
Though the end of the war had seen the incarceration or disappearance of many known Death Eaters, a dwindling few still remained fanatically devoted to their cause. It was the last of Voldemort’s loyal followers who determined that the veil and its new-found power would be the key to restoring their movement to its former glory. As they infiltrated the Department of Mysteries and fought to take it from the Unspeakables, as if called back by the dark turn of the tide, Bellatrix Lestrange and Bartemius Crouch Jr. returned through the veil. For a moment, the tide of battle changed, with some Unspeakables turning against their colleagues and the rest being controlled by the Imperious Curse, the veil became a vessel for Death Eaters to pour through. Though they were eventually overpowered and the survivors fled for parts unknown, this frightening event forced the Minister to hold an emergency council whereupon it was agreed, out of worry that Voldemort might also return, that the veil be destroyed. It was not long after that the remaining Unspeakables were forced to stand aside as Aurors seized possession of the veil and dismantled it.
But the damage had been done. Many of the Dark Lord’s faithful were regrouping, meeting in secret to plan for, what they called, his inevitable return. The appearance of the Dark Mark over Gringotts was an eerie testament to just how fragile the peace they’d so far kept truly was. Now, lines in the sand are being drawn once again. The Ministry is preparing for the worst, and though all is mostly quiet right now, it is a quiet that hangs on a delicate balance...
